About Us

Dr. Toni Kwan is a board certified small animal surgeon that has been in specialty surgery practice since 2012.  She completed her veterinary degree at the University of Illinois, and then a one year rotating internship at Purdue University.  Her post-graduate 3 year surgery residency was completed at North Carolina State University, where she was also introduced to surgery on exotic species through the local zoo program and Duke University's Lemur Center.  She enjoys volunteering with Brookfield Zoo to perform specialized surgeries on a wide variety of species, many of them endangered.

One of the most rewarding aspects of practicing veterinary surgery is the ability to connect with families and provide options for care.  Dr. Kwan fully recognizes that surgery can be one of many treatments available, and helps ensure families can elect for their best option.  Being informed before deciding for or against additional diagnostics or treatments is a vital part of the veterinary-client-patient relationship.

Innovet Surgery is primarily a desire to make specialized medicine more accessible to everyone, including zoo and rescue animals.  There is a need to provide specialty surgery for all of our animal friends, and the advanced medicine and equipment innovations are making that feasible without compromising the quality of care.

Innovet Surgery is growing and has the ability to evaluate joints with arthroscopy, using the Arthrex nanoscope. Anesthesia protocols and monitoring are provided by licensed veterinary technicians with many years of experience working in specialty surgery.  Our primary anesthesia technician has her specialty certification (VTS) in anesthesia and analgesia to provide your pet with the best options for anesthesia monitoring and pain relief.  With only 300 VTS anesthesia technicians in the country, we are fortunate to have this level of expertise! Minimally invasive surgery will also be an option available through Innovet Surgery at your local veterinary practice in the future.
